East German Statements on NATO exercises "Strong Express" and "Deep Furrow"6 Feb 1973 |
||
Description:
This is a statement by East German Minister of Defense Heinz Hoffmann on the 1972 NATO exercises "Strong Express" and "Deep Furrow", delivered during the fifth session of the Warsaw Pact Committee of Defense Ministers in Warsaw in 1972. These are believed to have particular significance for flanking movements of NATO forces in littoral environments. Among the distinguishing features of both these exercises are the role of reinforcements, exclusive use of conventional weapons, the importance of air forces and air superiority, and a high degree of integration and cooperation. According to Hoffmann, the results of the exercise were mixed. Two maps outlining the development of the exercises are included.
