Appendix 1 to the Report on the 22nd CMD Meeting: Summary of a Speech by Dmitri Iazov (Soviet Defense Minister) on the First Agenda Item

19 Oct 1988
Description: This is the summary of a report by Soviet Minister of Defense Dmitri Iazov on the publication of the strength and composition of the Warsaw Pact's (WP) armed forces. The report is given at the 22nd session of the WP Committee of Ministers of Defense (CMD) in Prague 1988. Iazov suggests postponing the release of this information. He analyzes the military strength of both NATO and the WP and explains the Soviet and US positions in preparatory talks for conventional disarmament negotiations. Furthermore, he introduces Soviet plans to reduce conventional, offensive armaments and suggests that the other WP members should do so too.
