Description: This is the transcript of a speech given by Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1985. He takes stock of the 30 years since the signing of the Warsaw Treaty, outlining the alliance's achievements for European peace. He states that it has achieved a strategic balance with NATO. Nevertheless, he admits that NATO has an edge in the field of nuclear weapons, and points to the dangers of US plans for space-based missile defense ("Star Wars").
