Speech by the Soviet Foreign Minister (Andrei A. Gromyko)

13 Oct 1983
Description: This is the transcript of a speech given by Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko at the 1983 meeting of the Warsaw Pact's Committee of Ministers of Foreign Affairs (CMFA) in Sofia. He claims that the deployment of US intermediate-range nuclear forces in Europe upsets the balance of forces. In this context, he places hopes in the Western anti-war movement that is resisting the deployment of nuclear weapons. He further states that the NATO countries have not contributed positively to the Vienna disarmament negotiations. At the end of his speech, he analyzes the alliance's relations with Western Europe and China.
