CIA Information Report

29 Mar 1957
Description: This CIA report on Soviet Marshall Zhukov's speech to senior commanders of the Group of Soviet Forces Germany (GSFG) in East Berlin in March 1957 claims to stem from a reliable source and states complete confidence in the accuracy of Zhukov's statements. A key point in the report is the capability of Soviet forces to reach the English Channel within 46 hours in the event of war. It is emphasized that the USSR will definitely strike first so as to gain advantage from the element of surprise. Further, Soviet personnel is warned not to disclose too much information to East German army volunteers, whose reliability is regarded as questionable.
