Declaration by the First Deputy Prime Minister of the German Democratic Republic (Walter Ulbricht) at the Meeting of the Political Consultative Committee

27 Jan 1956
Description: This speech by the general secretary of the East German Socialist Unity Party, Walter Ulbricht, at the 1956 Prague meeting of the Political Consultative Committee (PCC) focuses on East Germany's concern regarding West Germany's remilitarization and the employment of a number of Hitler's former military staff. Ulbricht sees West Germany's foreign policy as a threat to the national security of East Germany and the whole Socialist bloc, and explains on these grounds the necessity for creating an East German national army, which he argues, should become part of the Warsaw Pact's United Armed Forces (UAF).
