A Special Ally

Jan 2005
Description: This summary of oral history interviews with former Czechoslovak generals includes selected statements on the special situation of Czechoslovakia not having Soviet forces on its territory before 1968 and thus being forced to maintain an oversized army. It refers to General Franko's statement that the provision of 15 Czechoslovak combined-arms divisions in wartime was causing shortages in the civilian sector of the country. The interviews also describe the relationship between Czech and Soviet army officials and state that operational planning in the 1960s focused on an offensive strategy. The summary concludes with Generals Picek and Pezl highlighting some aspects of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
