Report on Lt Gen Vladimir Cheremnikh's Visit to PRIO, 1994Jun 1994 |
||
Description:
This report, based on notes by the Swedish Military Intelligence Service, summarizes key findings of Lieutenant General Vladimir Cheremnikh’s visit to PRIO in June 1994. The report examines Cheremnikh’s role as Soviet ‘military adviser’ to the Afghan Army in early 1980 as well as Moscow’s war planning for and interests in Scandinavia, particularly Sweden. According to Cheremnikh, who served as First Deputy Chief of General Staff in the Leningrad Military District in 1976-80 and 1982-86, the main Soviet argument in favor of taking Sweden during the Cold War would have been its strategic importance to the US air force. While denying any concrete plans for occupation, Cheremnikh put emphasis on the possibility of bombing Swedish air bases. Collection: Soviet Threat to Sweden
