Speech by the General Secretary of the KSČ (Miloš Jakeš)

7 Jul 1989
Description: This is the transcript of a speech delivered at the 1989 Political Consultative Committee (PCC) meeting in Bucharest by Miloš Jakeš, general secretary of the Czechoslovak Communist Party. He presents an analysis of the economic situation in Czechoslovakia and advocates further economic and political reforms, as well as closer cooperation among the Warsaw Pact countries. He gives a positive evaluation of the disarmament process and reports statistics on military reductions in Czechoslovakia. Further, he suggests that in the event that NATO and the Warsaw Pact should be dissolved as military alliances, the Socialist countries should create their own political organ.
