Study Material for the NVA Chiefs of Staff

5 Dec 1958
Description: This study material for senior officers of the East German National People's Army (NVA) discusses the basic principles, aims, and objectives of the use of nuclear and chemical weapons in the opening period of a war. Nuclear weapons are seen as the most powerful weapons with special political and military significance; particular emphasis is laid on the first strike. The document discusses who is responsible for selecting the targets, and other parameters. The usage of chemical weapons is analyzed, as well. They are seen as being less effective against humans than nuclear weapons.
