Opening Speech

Description: This is the transcript of the opening speech by Heinz Kessler, the East German defense minister, at the 18th session of the Warsaw Pact's (WP) Committee of Ministers of Defense (CMD) in East Berlin in 1985. Kessler's speech stresses the importance of a recent meeting between Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and US President Ronald Reagan in Geneva, where they discussed arms reduction.
