Note on a Meeting Between the GDR's Moscow Embassy, Political Dept. and the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs, South Asia Dept. 1963

30 Dec 1963
Description: This note on a conversation between officials of the GDR embassy in Moscow and General Smirnov, deputy director of the South Asia bureau of the Soviet foreign ministry, discusses the Sino-Indian border conflict. According to Smirnov, the Soviet Union maintains a neutral standpoint and seeks a peaceful solution in order to prevent interference from Western powers. Regarding a proposal for a new conference of non-aligned nations, Smirnov observes that such a conference would further consolidate the non-aligned movement and strengthen India's position as the leading Asian member.
