Description:
This document is a report on the visit to the Soviet Union by the Indian foreign minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in September 1978. During talks with Soviet officials and in public, Vajpayee confirms the importance of the 1971 Indo-Soviet Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. While signaling the intention of the Janata government to improve relations with both China and the US, Vajpayee promises that such steps would not impinge on India’s relations with the USSR. With respect to the Indian Ocean, Vajpayee publicly demands the removal of US bases in the region, foremost of the base in Diego Garcia.
