Minutes of the Meeting in Crimea

31 Jul 1972
Description: These minutes record the statements of the Warsaw Pact leaders participating at the July 1972 Crimea meeting of Warsaw Pact party leaders. The Soviet Party First Secretary Brezhnev states that better coordination among the members would ensure better results in stabilizing peace and security in Europe. He speaks in favor of the establishment of an European Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and gives particular emphasis to the normalization of relations between West Germany and the socialist countries. All of those present, except Romanian Head of State Ceauşescu, express full agreement with Brezhnev's proposals. Main topics addressed by the participants are: the socio-economic and political relations among the socialist states, relations between the Soviet Bloc and NATO countries, and European Security.
