During talks in Bucharest between a delegation led by visiting Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and a Romanian delegation led by General Secretary Nicolae Ceauşescu, the two sides discuss various issues such as nuclear proliferation, mediation efforts, Sino-Indian relations and the German question.
Regarding the question of nuclear proliferation, both Romanian and Indian delegates reaffirm their intention not to develop nuclear weapons. Additionally, both countries agree to coordinate their global peace efforts in the future with respect to the ongoing crises in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Mentioning the ongoing negotiations at the UN on a Middle East resolution, both sides discuss the existing obstacles such as Israeli intransigence, U.S. hesitance and Arab unwillingness to compromise. Regarding China, both delegations stress the effects of internal upheaval on the Chinese attitude towards the outside world. The Romanians recommend Indian steps to improve relations with China following Bucharest’s example.
