Note on the Soviet Position on Recent Developments in South Asia3 Jan 1972 |
||
Description:
This document, written by the East German Deputy Foreign Minister Oskar Fischer, reports the remarks given by the Soviet Chargé on the recent Indo-Pakistan war and the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent state. The Soviet official blames the policies of the Pakistani leadership in East Pakistan for being responsible for the outbreak of hostilities. Previous Soviet initiatives at the United Nations to end the fighting had been undermined by both the U.S. and China. Moscow interprets the emergence of an independent Bangladesh as a defeat for its opponents and ponders early diplomatic recognition of the new state. The Soviet Union will try to convince the new Pakistani president Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to accept the new realities. Collection: Indo-Soviet Relations
